Sketches for Auguste is a formal showing of a new work-in-progress by a group of world-class performing artists. Acclaimed violinists Jennifer Curtis and Pauchi Sasaki join choreographer/performers Murielle Elizéon and Tommy Noonan, along with performer Dohee Lee to create a multi-disciplinary chamber opera of sound and movement based on Henry Miller’s “The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder.”

This novella--which Miller believed to be his “most singular story”--depicts a clown’s near religious devotion to an audience through a trance-induced artistic offering that features an angel. Miller considered the process by which he paired a clown with an angel even more “surrealistic” than the final document itself. The notion of this work as autobiographical is as potent for Miller as it is to the performing artists, who will recreate the feverish state by melding music, movement, design, and text on the stage.

Sketches for Auguste will provide not only a fascinating evening of cutting-edge interdisciplinary work, but will also give a rare glimpse into a unique artistic collaboration. Curtis’s musical score will blend chordal harmonies with poly rhythms that will be interpreted through movement developed by Elizéon and Noonan. Visual aspects will derive from Miller’s own drawings as well as Lee’s costumes and Sasaki’s handmade electronic instruments.

All five artists regularly teach and work around the world. Jennifer Curtis was described by The New York Times as “an artist of keen intelligence and taste, well worth watching out for”, noting her solo concert in Carnegie Hall as “one of the gutsiest and most individual recital programs”; Murielle Elizéon is a French dancer who has worked professionally for 15 years across Europe, and is now based in North Carolina. Dohee Lee is a west-coast-based Korean artist with a deep history and practice in traditional Korean dance, drumming and contemporary performance; Tommy Noonan is an American artist who has shown work across the North America, Europe and Australia, and has written texts for The Performance Journal in New York and The Guidebook of Alternative Nows among others; Peruvian artist Pauchi Sasaki is currently a Rolex protégé under Phillip Glass, and has worked across disciplines, composing music for film, video, dance, theatre, installations and site-specific projects while applying new technologies.
